1863 S$1 PR62 PCGS. In the midst of the Civil War
1863<S$1> PR62 PCGS. In the midst of the Civil War, the price of silver coins rose above face value and the Mint made it more difficult for collectors to acquire proofs with greenbacks. Despite this obstacle, however, Bowers concludes that numismatists in such northern cities as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia purchased many of the 460 proof Seated dollars produced in 1863. Careful preservation of these specially minted coins was not a priority of these early collectors, resulting in most extant pieces being in less than Gem condition. This colorfully toned PR62 specimen displays medium intensity cobalt-blue peripheral patination that transitions to lavender and orange-gold coloration in the centers, with the overall color scheme assuming greater intensity on the obverse. All of the design features are exquisitely struck. The grade is defined by wispy hairlines, which are more noticeable in the fields.
From The Dr. John L.
