1863$1> MS64 NGC. Mint State examples of the 1863 dollar are difficult to locate today. Part of the reason for this is that, according to Walter Breen in his Complete Encyclopedia of U. S. and Colonial Coins, "...most Philadelphia Mint silver dollars 1862-1865 were exported to Latin American and East Indian ports." It is not unexpected, therefore, that the grading services have certified fewer than 70 Uncirculated pieces.
The near-Gem offered in this lot displays white lustrous surfaces. A sharp strike is apparent on the design features, including nice definition in Liberty's hair and sandal. A few minute marks on the Liberty motif, in the fields of both sides, and on the reverse rim at 10 o'clock prevent an even higher grade. This Civil War era dollar exudes great overall eye appeal. Census: 20 in 64, 4 finer (2/06).
