1863$1> MS64 NGC. During the height of the Civil War, very little precious metal coinage was produced in the East--with an exception for proof coinage--primarily due to a lack of available material as it seems that people in the North and the South were apt to hoard gold and silver, both in coin form and not in coin form, and they had little interest in allowing their precious commodity to escape their firm grip, however, in San Francisco and other places in the West, it was business as usual, with extremely large quantities of coinage produced in both silver and gold. This example is remarkable for its brilliant silver surfaces and exceptional contrast, with satiny luster, reflective fields, and extremely sharp design features that provide an aesthetic appeal far beyond most examples of the date that we have handled over our many years in the numismatic hobby.
