1863 S$1 MS61 PCGS. Relatively few Mint State exa
1863<S$1> MS61 PCGS. Relatively few Mint State examples of this elusive, Civil War era issue survive from a business strike mintage of 27,200 coins. Most silver and gold coinage was subject to hoarding after suspension of specie payments in 1862, and very few coins survived. As of June 2005, PCGS has certified 46 examples in the Mint State grades, and NGC 36 pieces. This MS61 survivor displays a film of light tan-gold color over bright surfaces that present moderate field to device contrast, and the design elements exhibit a relatively sharp strike. The luster is somewhat diminished in places, and a few minute contact marks are scattered about, along with some wispy slide marks in the fields.
From The Dr. John L.
