As experiments continued for the replacement for the Large cent and improvement in the troublesome copper-nickel small cents, the mint finally came upon French brone as a possibility for use on the cent coinage. This is the 1863 bronze cent, possibly even struck in 1863 (although some behind the locked doors finagling at the mint during this period may point to it being done in later years). Often this Pattern has the dies aligned in medal fashion rather than typical coin alignment.
