This historic, 9" x 5.5", 4-page Imprint features the strident words of Anti-Slavery Senator Charles Sumner! Charles Sumner was an American politician and United States Senator from Massachusetts. As an academic lawyer and a powerful orator, Sumner was the leader of the Anti-Slavery forces in the State and a major leader of the Radical Republicans in the U.S. Senate during the American Civil War. On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that as of January 1, 1863, all Slaves in the states currently engaged in rebellion against the Union “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”
