1863 H10C MS67 NGC.<p>The suspension of specie payments during the Civil War doubtless explains the Philadelphia Mint's limited delivery of 18,000 business strike Seated Half Dimes in 1863. A quick glance at the current Coin Dealer Newsletter (CDN, commonly referred to as the "Greysheet") will reveal that there is relatively little spread between the prices of surviving 1863 Half Dimes through the MS60 grade level. This suggests that this is a scarce date in worn grades, and we suspect that few coins actually reached circulation at the time of issue. There appear to be more coins extant in Mint State, but Superb Gems must still be considered rare. We last offered an MS67 example (it was certified by PCGS) as lot 6311 in our 1998 Portland ANA Signature Sale. That coin realized $3,105. The present example is alive with scintillating mint frost. There are modest traces of brightness in the fields, and the otherwise sharp strike wanes slightly over the upper left reverse wreath. Minimally patinated, there are no abrasions that would call into question the assigned grade. Population: 11 in 67, 1 finer (4/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
