1863<G$1> MS63 PCGS. Only 6,200 business strikes and 50 proofs were produced of the 1863 gold dollar, and probably no more than 50 business strikes are believed known today in all grades. An understandably elusive coin, the 1863 is also one of the rarest P-mint gold dollars in Mint State. This is an interesting and attractive coin, especially for the grade. The fields show heavy die striations on the obverse that run vertically, while on the reverse the striations are much lighter and are horizontal. The result in both cases is a bright, semi-prooflike gleam in the fields. While we are still on the subject of die polishing, it was done so vigorously to the obverse die that there is an area below the ear of Liberty that has been polished away. Fully struck, there are a few minor abrasions on each side, but nothing too worrisome. Rich golden-orange color covers each side and adds even more to the overall attractiveness of this rare gold dollar.
