When I came on this Civil War token the first time and asked the audience if anyone knew what an “Orleans House” was, I was answered that it was a hotel. To my embarrassment, I had thought that an “Orleans House” was a “House of Ill Repute”, lol, Upon coming upon this Token for a second time, I decided I owed you all some effort, so I researched the address. It just so happens that 531 Chestnut Street is a very significant address for All Americans as it is Directly across the street from the Birthplace of our Nation. It is precisely opposite the entrance to Independence Hall. Today, there is nothing present at that spot as it is a National Park and only grass occupies its location. Matt and I spent a few minutes and traced back through photographs the history of 531 Chestnut. We have included 5 photos of this historic location. From the vacant Lot just before it was turned into the park which clearly shows 533’s facade (1949), to 1953 right after it was leveled, to 1957 after the park was first modest sized formed, to how the full independence park appears today. But the most interesting is the last photo. This is a photo unearthed by Matt, it is how the site appeared in 1910. I believe the building the arrow points to is the original home of the Orleans House as it stood in 1863. I think you can match up exactly the facade of 533 to verify this location. WOW! I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do,
