1863 Civil War Union Draft “Exemption” Certificate: “by reason of having paid $300.00 is exempt from all liability to military duty under this present Draft.”
September 18, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Partly-Printed $300 Union Draft Commutation Document or Draft Exemption Certificate, Very Fine.
This original fully signed, “Certificate of Non-Liability...” measures about 8” x 10.25”, 1 page, at Canandaigua, New York. Being an exemption form to dodge the draft. Two old tape reinforcements along folds on the blank reverse, some tone, edge spots. This extremely rare official $300 Union Draft commutation document reads, in full:

“Certificate of Non-Liability to be Given by the Board of Enrollment. / We, the subscribers, composing the Board of Enrollment of the Twenty Fifth District of the State of New York, provided for in section 8, Act of Congress ‘for enrolling and calling out the national forces,’ approved March 3, 1863, hereby certify that George Clarke, of Seneca, Ontario county, State of New York, having given satisfactory evidence that he is not properly subject to do military duty, as required by said act, by reason of having paid $300.00, is exempt from all liability to military duty under this present Draft.”

This historical Document is signed by Provost Marshall and President of Board of Enrollment, another menber of the Board and the Surgeon of the Board. The very first of this extremely rare and important $300 Draft Exemption Certificate we have seen and offered.
