U.S. Forces, Port Royal Island. Head Quarters, Beaufort, S.C. April 6, 1863. Special Order No. 63, signed by Brigadier General Rufus Saxton. Comes in protective sleeve. * letter has separations at the folds, as seen in photos. Saxton was the military governor of the Department of the South. Later, during his term, Saxton would direct the recruitment of the first regiments of black soldiers to serve in the Union Army. Also interesting to note, General Sherman appointed Brig. Gen. Rufus Saxton to divide up confiscated Confederate land to be given to freed slave families, up to 40 acres. This became known as of Jan. 16, 1865, as "40 acres and a mule".
