1863 50C PR69 NGC. The No Motto Seated Liberty Half Dollar was produced in various types from 1839-1866. Only a single specimen striking from this era has been certified at the PR69 level by NGC and PCGS (1/03). Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is the only PR69 certified in the entire Seated Half series; and in fact, the next date to be so graded isn't until 36 years later in 1896, during a decade when proofs are still occasionally found in original sets and in estates in high grades. Not even a single PR69 example is extant today from the 1880s, an era with attractive, low mintages and a high survival rate. Original proof sets from the 1860s with high grade specimens have generally not been available at public auction since the 1920s. To find such a large sized silver coin that was struck in the middle of the Civil War and in this condition is, in our experience unprecedented. It also makes one wonder just whose hands this coin passed through in the past 140 years and preserved it in such immaculate condition. Struck in a year when the nation's attention was focused more on the struggle for national survival, it is truly miraculous that such a piece survived and can still be graded PR69 by today's grading standards. In addition to its rock-solid technical merits, the surfaces add breathtaking eye appeal in the form of rich, variegated toning that really needs to be seen in order to be fully appreciated. Suffice it to say that generally even swirls of cobalt, salmon-pink, gold, sea-green, and copper hues at the upper left obverse and lower left reverse borders yield to dappled olive and gray shades toward the opposite rims. The color is perhaps most vivid over the obverse portrait. As far as the surface preservation, there is not a single negative thing we can say. Virtually perfect features and full mint brilliance allow full appreciation of pinpoint striking detail. A Superb Gem of singular beauty and desirability that is sure to form the centerpiece of even the most advanced collection. From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
