1863<50C> PR65 NGC. Ruby, gold, and sea-green toning hugs the obverse border, and the reverse has consistent light chestnut color. The Seated Liberty displays pleasing frost. This well struck Gem is refreshingly void of contact, and is a worthy addition to an important cabinet. Unlike other silver denominations, Half Dollars were coined in quantity at Philadelphia throughout the Civil War, perhaps for bank reserves. Half Dollars were the highest 'new tenor' silver denomination, since Silver Dollars retained their heavy pre-1853 weight. A mere 460 proofs were struck. Population: 13 in 65, 8 finer (9/05).
