1863<$5> AU53 NGC. The 1863 is an exceptionally rare half eagle in the No Motto series. Only 2,442 business strikes were produced, and, as one might imagine, very few exist today in any grade. When encountered, VF-XF is the usual grade range for this issue with only 23 pieces known in AU, and a mere two coins graded in Mint State, by NGC (none have been so designated by PCGS). This is a well struck coin that retains a fair amount of reflective luster over the basic reddish-gold surfaces. The fields and devices are peppered with innumerable small marks on each side, none worthy of singular mention. Of the greatest importance to collectors of rare date gold. Census: 2 in 53, 9 finer (8/06).
From The Clifton Rodenburg Collection.
