1863 3CS MS65 NGC. Only 21,000 pieces were struck
1863<3CS> MS65 NGC. Only 21,000 pieces were struck of the 1863 three cent silver. Because of the uncertain outcome of the War of Northern Aggression in 1863, silver and gold was widely hoarded in the North (when found). This piece was undoubtedly from the hoarded silver set aside in that pivotal year. Even though much of the silver coinage struck during the War was hoarded, that does not mean it was set aside and preserved in high grades. This coin certainly was, though. The fields are deeply mirrored and flash forcefully through the rich, multilayered gray, rose, and sea-green toning that covers each side. Fully struck, and quite scarce as such, as most business strikes show considerable weakness, especially on the reverse stars. Population: 11 in 65, 17 finer (3/05).
