1863 3C Three Cents, Judd-320, Pollock-385, High R.7--Spot Removed--NCS. Proof. This rare pattern is approximately the diameter of a large cent, and, in fact, the portrait is from a Petite Head device punch. Thirteen stars about create further nostalgia for the obsolete denomination, last coined in 1857. The reverse, however, is more reminiscent of the as-issued 1864 two cent piece, although the denomination is designated as 3 CENTS within a small wreath, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA completing the statutory legends. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. An extremely rare pattern; uspatterns.com states, "Only 3 or 4 are known in this metal." Three pieces have been certified by PCGS, one each between PR63 and PR65, which may represent one or two resubmissions. None have been seen at NGC. This smooth, well struck, and nearly untoned piece has faint hairlines on the lower reverse. The eye appeal is affected by discolored laminations near 5 o'clock on the reverse and 12 o'clock on the obverse.
