1863 $20 AU58 NGC.<p>The 1863 is just a bit less rare than the similarly underrated 1862 Double Eagle. This is another issue that had a very high attrition rate, due to the economic conditions of the Civil War. Unlike the San Francisco Double Eagles of this year, few were saved and no significant hoards have been found. There are an estimated 50-60 pieces known in all About Uncirculated grades and more than three-quarters of these are in the AU50-53 range. The 1863 is very rare in the higher AU grades and extremely rare in full Mint State with just five to seven pieces known. The example in the Dallas Bank Collection was cataloged as "Extremely Fine or perhaps somewhat finer" while none of the five pieces in the Bass Collection were graded higher than XF45. Sharply struck throughout, the coin has deep green-gold coloration and strong, semi-prooflike fields. There are very few abrasions on either side, so those present must be mentioned, for pedigree purposes if nothing else. There is an almost horizontal planchet flaw in the field out from Liberty's eye and just below it is a small dash of hairlines, looking like someone long ago tried to wipe away the planchet flaw. There is also a mark on the truncation of the neck over the designer's initials, and three tiny depressions are seen on the obverse rim between 9 and 10 o'clock. We mention these irregularities for the sake of accuracy and not to alarm potential bidders as they sound far worse than they actually appear. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
