1863 1C PR66 Cameo NGC. During the Civil War, the Mint was producing Indian cents out of a composition consisting of 88% copper and 12% nickel, the same composition that had been in use since the first small cents were produced in 1856. During this time, these were simply called nickel cents or nickels, not because of the denomination, but because of the composition. In the next year, the composition was transitioned to bronze, a much easier alloy to work with. This high quality proof is sharply struck right down to the diamonds on the ribbon. Raised vertical die lines are visible directly in front of the Indian's eye. Attractive cameo devices are surrounded by reflective fields, and the entire coin has pleasing pinkish-red coloration. A few splashes of iridescent toning are present on the obverse, with a band of lilac and blue on the reverse. Census: 5 in 66 Cameo, 2 finer (6/07).
From The Santa Fe Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
