1863 1C PR66 Cameo NGC. During the Civil War, the Mint 1863[1C] PR66 Cameo NGC.
1863<1C> PR66 Cameo NGC. During the Civil War, the Mint was producing Indian cents out of a composition consisting of 88% copper and 12% nickel, the same composition that had been in use since the first small cents were produced in 1856. During this time, these were simply called nickel cents or nickels, not because of the denomination, but because of the composition. In the next year, the composition was changed to bronze, a much easier alloy to work with. This Gem Proof is sharply struck with full details on both sides. Even the diamonds on the ribbon are complete, and all of the feathers are fully delineated right to their very tips. Neat raised vertical die lines are visible directly in front of the Indian's eye, almost as if she is wearing an eyepiece. Attractive cameo devices are surrounded by reflective fields, and the entire coin has pleasing pinkish-red coloration. A few splashes of iridescent toning are present on the obverse, with a band of lilac and blue on the reverse. Take a close look at this one. Census: 3 in 66 Cameo, 2 finer (11/05).
