1863<1C> One Cent, Judd-299, Pollock-359, R.3, PR64 Red and Brown NGC. Snow-PT1. Struck from regular issue One Cent dies, but with bronze alloy used instead of the then current copper-nickel composition. The bronze alloy, of course, was introduced into circulation in 1864, which makes this pattern a transitional issue. Pollock lists four variants, all from the same dies, based upon the thickness of the planchet and the die alignment. While the thickness of the coin cannot be determined due to the encapsulation, this specimen has medal turn, 180 degrees from normal U.S. coin alignment. An intricately struck near-Gem with pleasing orange-red and aqua tints, exemplary aside from a trace of carbon above the headdress.
