<B>1863 1C MS66 NGC.</B></I> This issue's record high mintage of nearly 50 million pieces along with the relatively recent introduction of nickel into the alloy of the small cent resulted in overworked and overstressed dies on a scale that had never been experienced by Mint employees. Consequently, Mint State survivors are often poorly defined and lackluster. This pleasant exception is noteworthy for its vibrant luster and strong definition. Speckled amber toning blankets the reverse. Faint evidence of carbon is noted between feathers 2 and 3.
