1863<10C> Ten Cents, Judd-326A, Pollock-394, High R.6, PR65 NGC. During the Civil War, coins were hoarded by both North and South, and this pattern was part of an effort to replenish small change. This problem was eventually solved by fractional currency. The simple design features a shield, arrows, and wreath, not too different from the eventually released two cent piece and shield nickel. The legends define the issue as postage currency, redeemable in U.S. notes. These dies were stuck in various alloys. Judd-326A was struck with a plain edge in a billion copper-silver alloy. Deeply toned in blended cobalt-blue and russet colors, this fully struck example is disturbed by only wispy hairlines.
