1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-326A, Pollock-394, High R.6, PR65 NGC. During the Civil War, coins were hoarded by both North and South, and this pattern was part of an effort to replenish small change. This problem was eventually solved by fractional currency. The obverse features an ornamental shield with an inverted laurel wreath suspended from a ring. A pair of crossed arrows is behind the shield. The peripheral legend reads EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES. The reverse has 10 CENTS 1863 in the center and * POSTAGE CURRENCY * ACT JULY 1862 around the margin. These dies were stuck in various alloys. Judd-326A was struck with a plain edge in a billion copper-silver alloy. Deeply toned in blended cobalt-blue and russet colors, this fully struck example is disturbed by only a few faint obverse hairlines.
