Issued in Montgomery on January 1st, 1863, this $1 treasury note from the State of Alabama reflects the fiscal measures adopted during the Civil War era. Printed by the Southern Bank Note Company, the note bears an intricate central vignette of the Alabama State Capitol building, with dense detailing in the surrounding landscape. Flanking the vignette are ornate vertical ONE counters and oval portraits; the left side features a faint, engraved bust of a young boy while the right includes an ornamental numeral and a map of Alabama. Above the vignette reads, "Receivable in payment of all public dues," reinforcing its official use. The green overprint of the denomination "ONE DOLLAR" appears prominently across the lower center.
