Excerpt: ''…Dear children your draft came just in time Money is rather scarse hear…We have had a great depth of snow…in some parts of Vermont snow has been eleven feet deep…Last week was very warm it melted so fast it ran our rivers vary high…about 22 feet from low water mark…it has drowned cattle hogs and hens besides spoiling a great deal of hay and other property…the water has…toar the railroads to peases and fencis and carried of some houses…We have had some vary hard fought battles here they had one in Arcansas a place cald Pea Ridge they fought three days but our men gain the victory They had a battle abought two weeks ago at Pittsburg landing they fough two days but our men gain the victory we had 1000 killed and from 3000 to 4000 wounded The Rebel loss is abought twice that number We expect some more hard battles within a few days Royal says he will give them to the first of July to finish up the war…We had some news that our folks have taken New Orleans and gunboats was within six miles of Savannah The war is prograsing…'' Ink letter measures 5'' x 8''.
