The 1862-S is one of numerous unsung absolute and condition rarities in the long-lived Liberty Half Eagle series. The mintage is expectably limited for a Civil War-era gold issue, and it amounted to just 9,500 pieces. Unlike P-mint Half Eagles from the early 1860s, the 1862-S is so rare today not because of widespread melting, but rather due to extensive commercial use during thee early frontier era. S-mint gold issues continued to circulate during the Civil War, and the 1862-S Five probably remained in commerce well into the late 1870s (and probably beyond).
Survivors of this issue are very rare and seldom encountered either at auction or in dealers' inventories. Even when an example is offered for sale, it is apt to be well worn, sometimes also with significant impairments such as cleaning, scratches and/or rim bruises. As a solidly graded BU, this coin is a major condition rarity that ranks as one of the three finest-certified examples known to PCGS and NGC.
Sharply struck with light rose-gold color, the surfaces are possessed of full, satiny mint bloom. Scattered abrasions are well within the context of the assigned grade, a concentration of short grazes in the obverse field at Liberty's chin being important for pedigree purposes. One of the rarest and most important Liberty gold coins that we have offered in recent sales, this coin would serve with distinction in the finest specialized collection.
