1862-S $5 MS62 PCGS. The finest 1862-S that we have offered prior to this offering is an NGC MS61 specimen in our November 2004 sale and reoffered in May 2007. We have never offered another Mint State example of this rarity in any of our sales. In fact, two submissions certified MS61 by NGC and this PCGS MS62 example are the only three Mint State grading events for the date. There is little doubt that this wonderful piece is the finest known 1862-S half eagle.
Despite the activities of hoarders in the East, gold coins continued to circulate on the West coast throughout the Civil War era and beyond. Nearly every one of the 9,500 half eagles coined in San Francisco entered circulation, being lost, destroyed, or heavily worn. Typical survivors grade XF or lower with an average grade of just VF20 recorded in 1979 by David Akers who considered this date to rank among the most underrated issues of the series.
Frosty surfaces have sharp details and full yellow-gold luster that is enhanced by delightful pinkish overtones. Only slight weakness can be seen on the eagle's neck. Minor grade-consistent abrasions are scattered across both surfaces. Those collectors assembling complete sets of Liberty half eagles find that the issues of the 1860s are hardest to locate in any grade. The only example in the Smithsonian Institution, acquired as part of the famed Lilly collection, is a counterfeit. Population: 1 in 62, 0 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
