1862-S $20 MS61 PCGS. Double eagles were the bread and butter of the first San Francisco Mint, and the 1862-S had a typically generous production of 854,173 pieces. Since no one on the West Coast collected these costly bullion pieces in the 1860s, the entire issue went into circulation. The S.S. Republic and S.S. Brother Jonathan shipwrecks contained a number of 1862-S double eagles, but since those ships foundered three years later in 1865, most of the recovered pieces are in circulated grades.
This is a lustrous example, nicely struck save for a couple of left-side obverse stars. Small to moderate marks are distributed, but no more than expected of the grade. The 8 in the date is lightly repunched. Population: 3 in 61, 7 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
