1862-S $20 MS61 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The 1862-S is a Type One double eagle issue that has appreciable representation in the coins recovered from multiple Civil War-era shipwrecks, though most such pieces show traces of light wear. True Mint State examples remain elusive in the numismatic marketplace and bring strong premiums when they appear.
This attractive straw-gold survivor is well struck with no evidence of wear on the pale yellow-gold surfaces. The overall eye appeal is surprisingly strong for the MS61 designation, though a few wispy abrasions in the fields confirm the accuracy of the grade assigned. Still, an impressive piece that should fit well in a similarly graded date set. Census: 14 in 61, 14 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: James B.
