<B>1862-S $20 MS61 NGC.</B></I> In their reference work <I>An Insider's Guide to Collecting Type I Double Eagles</B></I>, Doug Winter and Adam Crum go to great lengths to emphasize the poor striking quality on the obverse of the typical 1862-S double eagle. Their comments in regard to this issue include the following: "The weak strike seen on the obverse makes the 1862-S a hard coin to grade properly," and "In Mint State, it remains extremely rare."<BR> Obviously, the current example represents an exception to the rule, at least as far as striking quality is concerned. While not outstanding, the overall definition of Liberty's hair certainly seems acceptable, as does the level of detail observed on the obverse stars, although stars 1 and 2 are flat. The piece shows fine luster and attractive coloration, and surface marks are relatively minor for the grade. An excellent opportunity for the specialist in this challenging series.
