1862-S $20 AU58 NGC. A modestly abraded, only lightly
1862-S<$20> AU58 NGC. The sale of the S.S. Brother Jonathan treasure included 68 different examples of this date. However, only one piece was graded Mint State (with environmental damage) and only one other was graded AU58. After that, about 40 lower quality AU grade coins were offered. Even though the rarity of this issue was noticeably diminished when that treasure was discovered and dispersed, it is still quite rare in top grades. About a dozen Mint State coins were found in the S.S. Republic treasure, so even this remarkable find did little to change the importance of this particular example, which remains one of the best available examples of the date.
Although the surfaces are typically abraded, this piece has excellent color and above-average eye appeal. The surfaces are fully brilliant with rich rose-gold color. Just a trace of wear is evident on the highest points. Unlike most, it is remarkably well detailed with strong design definition on both sides. Some confusion exists regarding the typical quality of strike for this date. Bowers suggested that this issue is typically well struck, while Winter and Crum commented that it "is among the most weakly struck double eagles of any type." This specimen is finer than the Dallas Bank coin or any of the examples in the Bass Collection.
From The Wyoming Collection.
