1862-S $20 AU53 PCGS. Double eagle mintage figures during the Civil War were very much a tale of two cities: While the Philadelphia Mint emissions plummeted as the outcome of the war was increasingly in doubt, Western commerce required (and preferred) gold for most transactions, and supplies of California gold for coinage in San Francisco were plentiful. Of the plentiful mintage of more than 850,000 pieces, most examples of the 1862-S showed circulation, down to Very Fine or Extremely Fine grade. Shipwreck recoveries from the S.S. Republic and the S.S. Brother Jonathan, however, both contained examples that increased the issue's availability. This piece offers rich yellow-orange surfaces with numerous small abrasions on each side--none individually distracting--characteristic of a short spate in circulation.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
