<B>1862-S $2 1/2 AU50 NGC.</B></I> The paltry mintage of 8,000 pieces created a near-instant rarity, as the vast majority of the production apparently entered circulation, like so many S-mint gold coins of the era. Few Mint State pieces are known, and the typical survivor grades AU or so. This piece is typical in condition, but atypical in appeal. The strike is well executed at the peripheries, with minor weakness noted on the hair below Liberty's coronet and the eagle's left (facing) leg. Much luster radiates from the semi-prooflike fields.
