c. 1861 Civil War Period, Carte de Visite Photograph, of President James Garfield as Commander of The 42nd Ohio, by Anthony, Choice Very Fine.
Authentic Carte de Visite of then Lieutenant Colonel James Garfield as Commander of the 42nd Ohio in late 1861. It measures about 2.5” x 4” with backstamp of Edward T. Anthony, New York and Washington. Garfield commanded the 42nd Ohio, but soon rose in rank to command a brigade at Shiloh and the siege of Corinth. Later he became William S. Rosecrans' chief of staff and gave the general advise which, if heeded, could have resulted in the battle of Chickamauga being a Union victory instead of a defeat. In late 1863, Garfield resigned his commission to take his earlier won seat in Congress. While in Washington, he became a Radical Republican and backed Secretary of War Salmon P. Chase in opposition to Abraham Lincoln and his then meek Civil War policies. Extremely rare and important.
