1862 "Philadelphia Inquirer" Page One Merrimac Engraving On March 9, 1862, the first engagement between ironclad ships took place, marking a revolution in Naval warfare. The Merrimac had been a powerful steam frigate scuttled when Union forces abandoned the Norfolk Navy Yard. Subsequently raised by the Confederates, converted into an ironclad and renamed the Virginia, she sailed into Hampton Roads on March 8th, sank the Cumberland and Congress and scattered the rest of the fleet. The next day, though, the Merrimac was challenged by a strange-looking Union ship, the Monitor. The two ships fought close-range for four hours to a draw. This eight-page issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer, dated March 11, 1862 has incredible first-hand, front-page coverage of this historic battle, including an engraving of the Merrimac as well as more news of the Civil War, and national and world events. Approximately 16" x 22" in size, condition is very good with weakness and separation at the folds. Worthy of display and a great source for historical research. Lot:251
