1862 New Hampshire Civil War Letters
New Hampshire Civil War Letters With 1862 Loyal War Governors' Conference Content. Two pages, 7.75” x 10”, on State of New Hampshire Executive Department letterhead, Concord, September 21, 1862, from G. H. Tucker, to “Friend Thompson”. G. H. Tucker, working in some capacity in the Executive Department, writes to his friend in part: “Yesterday the Govr & council & the Adju. Genl. Were all away & I “run the old machine” alone & had my hands full. The Govr will be gone three or four days this week. The Northern Govrs have a convention about which mum is the word. Say nothing about it.” The meeting to which Tucker refers was the later referred to as the “Loyal War Governors' Conference held on September 24 and 25, 1862 at Altoona, Pennsylvania. With the war effort going badly for Lincoln, this meeting provided him much needed support from the northern states. Tucker also makes a stark comment on recent battle at Antietam and the futility of sending more state troops for the war effort: “But what good does it do to send off Regts. if we lose as we have this last week 15000 more prisoners & 10000 killed & wounded & nothing accomplished?” The letter has the usual fold creases, else very good. Included is an additional letter, one page, 7.75” x 10”, on New Hampshire Adjutant General's Office letterhead, Concord, December 27, 1865, from Nathaniel Head, to Greenleaf C. Brown, Stratham, New Hampshire. Nathaniel Head acknowledges shipment of a copy of the Adjutant General's report. With the usual folds, else very good condition. Ex. Henry E.
