1862 Letter to Ohio Congressman Samuel Cox
1862 Letter to Ohio Congressman Samuel Cox Requesting Appointment to West Point. Two pages, 4.75” x 8”, on paper with color patriotic eagle and shield vignette, from Thomas Cook, Columbus, Ohio, December 17, 1862. A remarkably illiterate from one of Cox's young constituents begging for a spot at West Point or at least “a chance for me to come on a Mann sic of Warr sic or any other Vessel as Midshipmann sic to learn eather sic a good and true Officer or a good Seamann sic .” The writer further writes that “I would be thankful for all my life to you if you would grant me this one little favor. My Father is a true and old Demokrat sic and so am I. I will sign out with a greater force that I did before…”. Given the need for men to serve in the ranks during the Civil War, one suspects that young Thomas Cook was granted to serve in the military. Fine condition. Ex. Henry E.
