1862 H10C PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Not surprisingly for a Civil War era proof, the 1862 was subjected to melting at the Philadelphia Mint. Only 430 of the 550 coins produced were distributed as part of the 1862 proof sets, the balance of the coins being tossed into the melting pot. Even so, less discerning collectors should be able to locate coins that grade up to and including PR64 with relative ease. As a Gem, this date is scarce, and the present Superb Gem easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. A simply stunning specimen, the bright, mirrored fields and fully brought up devices shine powerfully through golden-pink and sea-green target toning. The colors are especially vibrant at direct angles, and the otherwise smooth surfaces reveal a lone lintmark (as struck) in the left obverse field that should help trace the pedigree of this important Half Dime. Combined NGC and PCGS in PR67 is just seven coins, and none are finer (7/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
