1862 G$1 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. 1862 was a high water mark for business strike production of the gold dollar. More than 1.3 million pieces were struck, which is more than the combined mintage of the remaining dates from its decade. Presumably, this large delivery occurred prior to the suspension of specie payments. While business strike 1862 gold dollars are common, the same cannot be said about the proofs, which have a tiny emission of just 35 pieces. The rare proofs can be identified by diagnostics set forth by Breen, "Proofs have polish in topmost feather, heavy low date, some hollow leaves; possibly 15-20 survive." Preparation of the dies for proof coinage removed this selected low relief inner detail on the present specimen, which features radiant devices and deeply mirrored fields. Light orange toning on the central obverse contributes further to the eye appeal.
From The Dr. Robert J.
