Civil War era U.S. Fractional Currency 1862 sheet of SIX notes for 10 cents. Features central vignette of U.S. 10 Cent Postage Stamp featuring George Washington portrait. Back has large "10" in engraved oval surrounded by terms of redemption. Face legend reads: "POSTAGE CURRENCY. Furnished by the ASSISTANT TREASURERS AND DESIGNATED DEPOSITARIES OF THE U.S. RECEIVABLE FOR POSTAGE STAMPS AT ANY POST OFFICE". The U.S. Postage Currency was issued in 8162 and was the first issue of Fractional Currency. It was intended to replace small change as few small coins were in circulation. Originally intended for the purchase of postage stamps, the Fractional Currency notes soon became the main medium of commerce and replaced coins in daily transactions.
