Featured in this lot we have a Civil War U.S. Cavalry saber and metal scabbard originating from 1862. This sword is a model 1862 also known as M1862 and was manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb. The piece shows a steel blade with a solid brass guard and a leather and brass wrapped wood handle. This blade is marked "Mansfield & Lamb Forsetdale. R.I." on one side and U.S. J.H. 1862". across the other. The scabbard shows simple metal construction with two attachment point rings. The sword was used promanately in the American Civil War and replaced out the larger and heavier m1840 cavalry saber. The M1862 was used to outfit light cavalry units as well as officers such as George Armstrong Custer and J.E.B. Stuart. The piece shows good condition overall with some light wear and pitting on the blade and guard indicative of age. The sword measures 41" long with a 35" blade.
