EP-21, HB-176, S-129, Reed ME01. One Cent, MENDUM’S FAMILY WINE EMPORIUM, Broadway, New York City, Very Fine.
Rated as Rarity-4 (31 to 40 known) according to Fred Reed. The 1861 U.S. Postage issue blue Benjamin Franklin stamp is heavily stained on the face from when placed into this case, yet otherwise perfectly centered while the mica is clear and unbroken with just faint natural lamination lines from circulation. The case itself is fully original, and has lovely light brilliant underlying satiny luster shimmering on its reverse being a natural mellow golden-chestnut in color. The case is a lovely, sharp and distinctive example for this popular better merchant. If the stamp had not been dropped on the floor, one would have a hard time locating another piece with so much original luster still present.
