1862 50C PR63 Cameo PCGS. Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert,
1862 50C PR63 Cameo PCGS. Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert, in their Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, contend that: "This date has often been hoarded and promoted because of its relatively small mintage (253,000 business strikes and 550 proofs). The "whiplash" effect of some of these promotions is a belief that the 1862 is much more common than traditionally believed. The truth is somewhere in between." With respect to the proofs, it would appear from the population/census data that a goodly number have indeed survived; PCGS and NGC have seen nearly 300 examples. A little over 30 coins, however, have been given the Cameo designation. The PR63 Cameo presented in this lot is fully brilliant with excellent field-motif contrast, and a powerful strike imparts crisp definition to the design elements. A limited number of faint hairlines on the obverse central device are hardly noticeable even under high magnification, and a few more in the fields are virtually indistinguishable from die polish lines. A tiny indentation in the right obverse field aids in the coin's pedigree. In sum, an impressive Civil War era proof that reveals fewer marks than what might be expected for the grade designation. Population: 7 in 63 Cameo, 5 finer (12/06).
From The Lanterman's Mill Collection, Part Two.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
