1862 50C MS67 NGC. The 1862 half dollar is an underrat
1862<50C> MS67 NGC. The 1862 half dollar is an underrated issue in all grades. Its mintage of 253,000 examples is less than 10% of the previous year's production. As a result, this date has been hoarded and subsequently promoted because of its relatively small mintage. However, according to Wiley and Bugert, this has led to a "whiplash" effect, leading some to believe it is actually more common than believed. Most examples seen were part of the Guatemala Hoard, and cleaned as a result. This original coin, however, is tied for the finest example known. Struck shortly after the dies were lapped, this specimen's prooflike effect is intact, with bright, highly reflective fields. The strike is sharp in all areas, with brilliant surfaces except for a thin ring of dark russet and blue toning around the obverse periphery and a faint accent of the same colors around the reverse. Close to technical perfection: The only mark that can reliably be used as a pedigree identifier is a reeding mark in the right obverse field near Liberty's knee.
