1862 $5 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Ex: Trompeter. Ed Trompeter owned perhaps the most magnificent collection of proof U.S. gold coins ever assembled. It was virtually complete for all series from 1858 forward. This task is even more difficult than implied by the tiny mintages, since many if not most proof gold coins were eventually spent or melted. Heritage purchased a significant portion of the Trompeter collection in 1998, including all of the proof half eagles. These were sold intact to a private collector, and our records show only a single proof 1862 half eagle has appeared in a Heritage auction, our September 2005 Long Beach Signature. Although mint records assert that 35 proofs were struck, survivors are of the greatest rarity. PCGS has certified just four examples in all grades, assuming that none among this figure represents a resubmission during the past twenty years.
The 1862 proof dies are identified by a raised center dot on the third vertical shield stripe. The devices are prominently frosted throughout, and appear worthy of a Deep Cameo designation, although PCGS has conservatively assessed the piece only as Cameo. The strike is sharp, if slightly incomplete on the eagle's right (facing) claw and on the peak of the hair bun. Faint die polish lines, as made, criss-cross the fields. Adventurous souls who wish to trace the pedigrees for the handful of proof 1862 half eagles need note two characteristics of the present example. A faint hairline in the field near Liberty's mouth journeys briefly northwest, and a trivial retained lamination borders the central top of the eagle's left (facing) wing. Given the paucity of auction appearances of this desirable proof issue, the opportunity to obtain a high quality specimen is indeed fleeting.
From The Dr. Robert J.
