1862 $5 AU58 PCGS. Moderate scattered field abrasions appear on the lustrous yellow-gold surfaces of this low-mintage Civil War issue, produced to the extent of only 4,465 pieces. A wedge of smoke-gold patina appears on the reverse from the eagle's head upward toward 11 o'clock. The federal government had ceased to pay out gold coins by 1862, leading to drastically reduced mintages. While most later dates in the long-running Liberty Head series are fairly obtainable, earlier dates such as this rare issue are extremely elusive and see ceaseless collector demand. Population: 2 in 58, 1 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
