1862<$5> AU58 PCGS. Unsurprisingly for a coin of which only 4,430 business strikes were minted, this example shows much prooflikeness on both sides. There are many minuscule abrasions, but none are distracting or easily visible without a loupe, save for a couple of ticks in the left obverse field and one in back of the eagle's neck. The Garrett-Guth gold Encyclopedia comments of this issue, "The date is rarer than most of the Charlotte and Dahlonega issues of the 1840s and 1850s. Only about two dozen 1862 half eagles have crossed the auction block in the last two decades. Mint State examples of the date are very rare and underrated ... " The appealing surfaces are orange-gold, and the eye appeal is considerable. Another piece of equal quality and eye appeal might take many years to surface. Population: 2 in 58, 1 finer (9/06).
