Feb 12th 1862,'' reads in part: ''…We have made another move down the road towards Dixey. We are now 29 miles distant from Cumberland. We have of Regts. Batterys and several troups of Cavalry there is other troups between here and Cumberland. We are treated in a most beautiful place and it was a grand sight to see the Batallions of Infantry Cavelry and the Batterys on Drill to day which has been a most beautiful so much like Spring. We received orders at Camp Kelly on Sunday evening to pack up they backed up the trains. Capt. Banning was detailed to oversee the loading the wagons and we finished in little over an hour had two trains of 22 loads each the railroad men said that it was the quickest job they ever seen done on the road. Well I suppose that if the 43rd is more then full as you state in your letter that they will be brought into service before long. Does Bill Uffold consume as much spirits as he used to…'' Ink letter measures 8'' x 10''. The 4th Ohio saw action at Petersburg, Winchester, Port Republic, Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Manassas Gap, Rapidan, and Wilderness. Toning along creases and chips at top, otherwise near fine condition.
