1862 $20 AU58 NGC.<p>Many 1862 Double Eagles were exported because of the uncertainties of the Civil War, and later melted. As a result, this issue has a low survival rate. However, most collectors (other than the small group of dedicated Liberty Head Double Eagle specialists) do not realize the true rarity of this issue. We believe it is the rarest Type One Double Eagle from this mint in high grades and that it narrowly trails the 1859 in terms of overall rarity. There are 130-150 pieces known in all grades with just 26-30 in About Uncirculated and another six to eight in Mint State. The level of demand for the 1862 Double Eagle is currently exceptionally high and it appears on more want lists than any other Philadelphia issue of this design. Do not be surprised if this is one of the more hotly-contested lots in the entire sale! Well struck overall, there is just the slightest trace of friction in the fields of this lustrous piece. Close examination reveals no obvious or distracting abrasions, and attractive medium orange-gold coloration covers both sides. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
