<B>1862<$20> AU58 NGC.</B></I> A lovely example of this, the rarest P-mint Type One double eagle, produced during the Civil War at a time when the outcome of that "great conflict" was in doubt and a number of large, bloody battles occurred. The mintage dropped from nearly 3 million pieces in 1861 to 92,000+ pieces in 1862; examples are accordingly rare in all grades. The present specimen boasts lightly abraded but lustrous and delightful orange-gold surfaces, with just a trace of highpoint wear. A couple of reeding marks are noted on Liberty's cheek. Census: 17 in 58, 8 finer (9/06).
